A Clockwork Orange (1971)
No film is more closely associated with Thamesmead than Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange.
Southmere Lake, Binsey Walk and the surrounding estate became the setting for several of the film's most memorable scenes, with Kubrick using Thamesmead's futuristic architecture to create the dystopian world of Alex and his Droogs.
More than 50 years later, fans still visit the lakeside to see the locations that helped make the film a cinematic classic.
Beautiful Thing (1996)
Jonathan Harvey's much-loved coming-of-age story Beautiful Thing presented a very different side of Thamesmead.
Rather than using the estate as a futuristic backdrop, the film celebrated the everyday lives of the people who called it home. Much of the film was shot around Southmere Lake and the surrounding estates, including the former Lakeside Bar, creating an authentic portrait of working-class South London that continues to resonate with audiences today. Harvey chose Thamesmead because he had previously taught at a local school and wanted the setting to feel genuine.
